Saturday football: Tulips smashed for six but Bird bags late winner to keep Tigers top

Spalding United were smashed for six at Newcastle Town on Saturday, while Holbeach United continued their strong start to the season with a 1-0 win at Oadby Town.

Starting with the Tulips, they suffered a first Evo-Stik NPL Division One South loss of the campaign at The M Club Stadium.

Jordan Cole inspired the rout with goals on 6, 32, 66 and 77 (pen) minutes, while Sam Bradbury (20) and Jon Kapend (31) also got in on the act for Newcastle.

Gary King did net a 44th-minute consolation for Chris Rawlinson’s side, who handed a full debut to teenager Marcel Chipamaunga.

Spalding will hope to bounce back from the humbling when they host Cleethorpes Town on Monday (3pm).

Meanwhile, Holbeach remain top of the ChromaSport UCL Premier Division table and unbeaten after four games following their 1-0 success at Freeway Park.

Will Bird struck a deflected 81st-minute winner following good work from Charley Sanders to make it ten points from an available 12 for Seb Hayes’ side ahead of Wednesday night’s tricky home date with Yaxley (7.45pm).

Down in UCL Division One, Pinchbeck United drew 2-2 with Rushden and Higham United. A full report from that game is available here.

In the ChromaSport PDFL, Sutton Bridge United enjoyed a fine 2-1 win over Premier Division champions Peterborough Sports Reserves.

Holbeach United Reserves also picked up an impressive 2-1 success over Sawtry thanks to strikes from Steve Barnes and Scott Powley.

Plenty more football in Thursday’s Spalding Voice.
