Long Sutton Men 1st 4
City of Peterborough 4th 2
Revenge was sweet for Sutton as they avenged their early-season defeat at Peterborough.
The majority of the first period action was in the opposition half with several penalty corners won before Luke Proctor swept home from close range.
A second came from a smart attack down the right found Josh Baker to cut inside to fire home into the top corner.
Brad Sargeant unleashed an unstoppable strike into the netting to make it 3-0.
The visitors pulled one back before the break and made it 3-2 in the last ten minutes.
Any nerves were eased when a penalty corner fell for Sargeant to finish perfectly again on the forehand to keep up their hopes of promotion from East Men’s Division Two North West.
Nick Ellis was named player of the match.
Long Sutton Men 2nd 1
Cambridge South 3rd 1
Sutton faced a tough task against an experienced visiting side but looked to be on the way to victory when Daniel Plant sent a thunderbolt into the away net.
That came after a long period of home domination but any hopes the floodgates would open were dashed by a solid goalkeeping display.
The second half saw the turn of home defenders to become stars of the show with Alfie Braginton making some confident saves. Man of the match Tom Baguley also repelled any attempts goalwards, however, a short corner in the closing stages saw Cambridge equalise to grab a share of the points.
Man of the match Daniel Simpson scored for Sutton 3rd in a 3-1 defeat at St Ives 4th.
Wisbech 4th 0
Long Sutton Ladies’ 2nd 1
Buoyed by the win against Ely City the previous week, Sutton faced local rivals Wisbech in confident mood.
With a change in the formation, partly due to the absence of Pippa Hastings but mainly to ensure an attacking set up, Sutton held firm against an early Wisbech attack.
Sutton soon settled and a great break from the speedy Annabelle Giles saw her drive at the Wisbech defence with Aimee Betts applying the finish for what proved to be the only goal of the game.
Sutton continued to dominate with Katie Whittaker quick to put in a strong tackle whenever Wisbech threatened and carry the ball forward.
Sutton almost stretched their lead but Lillie Tegerdine was just unable to apply the finish, having taken up an intelligent position at short corners.
Sutton continued to press Wisbech back with forwards Alison Whittaker, Chantil Sinclair and Holly Murdoch defending from the front.
After the break Wisbech threatened more but Sutton’s defence are a settled unit.
George Synnott read the game well, closing down the Wisbech forwards and the back three of Julie Skate, Emma Grosvenor and Sarah Skate were as imperious as ever.
Wisbech did win a couple of short corners late on and goalkeeper Ellie Sandal made an impressive late save as she was in no mood to give up the clean sheet.
The player of the match award went to Whittaker.
Grosvenor starred for Sutton Ladies’ 1st team in their 6-0 defeat at Cambridge City 5th in Division Two North West.
