Rotary Club’s efforts bear fruit in Spalding churchyard

Spalding Parish Church grounds have a definite look of spring about them thanks to the efforts of The Rotary Club of South Holland.

St Mary and St Nicolas Church has a ring of purple crocus outside the west door. Five thousand crocus bulbs were planted by members of the Rotary Club of South Holland on World Polio Day in October last year to signify Rotary International’s involvement in the fight against the disease.

Rotary International, together with partners World Health Organisation (WHO) and the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, continues the fight against polio together with many thousands of volunteers who travel to infected areas to carry out the extensive immunisation programmes.

The purple crocus signifies the colour of the ink applied to the little finger of children when they have been immunised – the “purple pinkie”.
