Ros breezes to Welland Yacht Club regatta victory after double delight

Ros Nickols topped the leaderboard at Welland Yacht Club’s latest regatta after winning two of the three races on Sunday.

The Cradge Bank-based club’s fourth regatta of the season started with a reasonable breeze and nine boats taking part in race one, with two junior entries.

The boats soon picked up good speed with Nickols and Andy Agar soon breaking away from the pack.

That left a mid-group of boats vying for position on the water. However, the odd gust of wind provided a couple of near-capsize moments for a few of them.

Once the personal handicaps had been applied, the race one results saw Nickols take the win from Agar, with Niall Holland third and Martin Cook fourth.

Race two again saw Nickols break away from the pack to repeat the win.

This time, second place went to Emma Agar, with Paul Wilson third and Neal Tack and Rebbeca Slator fourth.

For race three, the rain that had threatened all day finally came down – and with that the wind died, prompting a shortened course. With the competitors searching for a patch of elusive breeze to maximise boat speed, experience proved the key.

Andy Agar emerged victorious ahead of Tack and Slator in second. Third place went to Emma Agar, with Nickols back in fourth.

That was good enough to earn Nickols overall glory ahead of Andy Agar in second and Emma Agar in third. Tack and Slator completed the top four.
