Roberts eyes quadruple after steering Pinchbeck to Sunday League history

A Josh Ford hat-trick steered Pinchbeck United Sunday to their own slice of history at the weekend.

The prolific striker starred at Sincil Bank as Tom Roberts’ Pinchbeck became the first-ever team from the Spalding Sunday League to lift the Lincs FA Sunday Cup with a 5-0 triumph over Thurlby United.

Tommy Treacher fired the quadruple-chasing side into the lead, before Ford’s quick-fire double made it 3-0 before the break. Captain marvel Ford then completed his treble, before Andy Law rounded off the scoring.

For boss Roberts and his stellar side, it’s a third cup win this campaign – following the John Chappell Shield and the League KO Cup.

Roberts said: “It’s great to achieve the goal we set out at the very start. We’ve always wanted to win this competition and I’m absolutely over the moon that we’ve done it.

“I always knew that we would win the game if we played to our potential – and we didn’t have to get out of second gear really.

“I said before the game that it’d probably be up there with the best moments of my career if we won – and now we’ve won it, I feel even better.

“Perhaps my favourite moment was seeing (league chairman) Pete Maltby grinning from ear-to-ear after the game when he got his hands on the trophy.

“He and the league do an incredible amount of unsung work to just keep the league going each year. This is for them as much as us.

“What’s next for us? We’ll have to have a sit down in the summer and think about that. Maybe we’ll have a go at the FA Sunday Cup. Maybe we’ll try and win this competition back-to-back.

“Both of those sound like exciting targets. There’s always another target.”

Pinchbeck and Roberts can achieve another record on Sunday. If they beat Jubilee in a double-headed fixture at Monkshouse Lane (10.30am) they’ll clinch the championship and a first-ever Spalding Sunday League quadruple.

Pinchbeck Sunday: Drury, Wilson, A Jackson, Stevens, Fairweather, Murrell (Law 74), Millson, Pinner (Patterson 67), Cartwright, Treacher, Ford (Barnes 79). Not used: N Jackson, Gardner.
