Reynolds wins on black ball to keep Donington flying

Donington C are the early leaders in the Spalding & District Snooker League after adding a 5-1 win at Holbeach D to their opening week’s 4-2 success.

Mick Pearl (o28) and Shaun Pickering (r14) won the first two frames before Neil Reynolds (o63) held off Denis Hix (r7) 98-97 in a black ball game to make it 3-0. Ben Wrigglesworth (o35) struck a 32 break for 4-0 with Don Monk (o14) winning the final frame 64-36, including a 21 break, as consolation.
Bourne SC A also have two wins out of two, repeating their first-day victory with another 4-2, this time against Pyramid A. Mark Gray (o98) led the way with breaks of 33, 30 and 20 in his 122-100 win after Carl Gibson (o28) had opened with a 22 clearance in a 60-56 black ball victory.
Ian Gibson (scr) confirmed victory before Pyramid hit back with wins for John Twell (o14) and Dean Cole (o21). Cole’s game went 57-56 on the black ball against Oliver Player (o35), who had a break of 20.
Only two other teams boast 100 per cent records, albeit after only playing once. Pyramid C were on a free week after their win a week earlier, while Services A opened their account with a 5-1 victory at Holbeach C. Vince Fitter (o42) had a break and a clearance of 22 in his win and Phil Spencer (o7) won a black ball game before a 27 clearance secured success for Chris Dunmore (o35). Mark Gregory (o28) pulled one back and had a 30 break before Jake Haslam (o21) took the fifth frame on the black ball.
Holbeach B bounced back from a 6-0 defeat to win 4-2 at Pyramid D. They fell behind to Marcus Hamilton (o28) but Barry Haynes (o7), Pete Mullane (o35) and Adi Liquorish (r7) settled the points before Ryan Burton (scr) hit back for the hosts.
An all-Consti battle went 4-2 in favour of hosts ‘H’ in a see-saw encounter against the G team. Adam Mayman (o28) put the home team ahead but Ady Sibley (o35) levelled. Mark German (o35) put the H team 2-1 up, only for Darren Woodberry (o35) to level again. Victory was decided when Doug Garfoot (o21) beat Mark Wilkinson (o14) 63-54 in a black ball game.
A thriller at Services C saw the home side hold off Consti E’s comeback to win 4-2. Craig Fitter (o63) put them ahead and Geoff Hemsil (r21) had a black ball 62-51 win against Simon Law (scr) to make it 2-0. However, it was all square after four frames following wins for James Kingston (o21) and Jack Chilvers (o21), whose 74-29 win included a 41 break. It all went down to the final frame and Nigel Cherry (scr) proved up to the task, seeing off Martin Ulyatt (o14) 57-18.
Division Two looks to be heading for an equally well-balanced season and remarkably, after two weeks, only Services B have two wins to their name.
They followed up their 5-1 win against Services D with a 4-2 verdict at Gosberton A. Jamie Mumby (o21) put the hosts ahead but Jason Rose (o28) made it 1-1 with breaks of 25 and 23. Carl Wand (scr) regained the home lead, only for Fred Cummins (r14) to make it 2-2. It was left to Jeff Collins to hold his nerve with a 53-41 black ball victory against Alan Jackson (scr) to decide the result.
Services D had started their campaign with a 6-0 defeat but hit back with a 5-1 success against Consti F, despite conceding the first frame to Darren Stanley (r28). It was one-way traffic after that with wins for Paul Spicer (o14), Ian Smith (scr), Kevin Robbs (r7) on a respotted black, and Russ Morse (scr).
It was the first game of the new season for both Boundary A and Donington A, with the match going 4-2 in favour of the hosts. Pete King (r7) and Daniel Smith (o14) put them in the driving seat but Marcus Reynolds (r7) pulled one back. A black ball game went 55-43 in favour of Tim Burrows (r14) against Kevin Hawes (o7) to make sure of victory before Tony Scully (o35) narrowed the gap.
Whittlesey C came back from behind to win 4-2 at Consti B. Gary Thewlis (scr) put them ahead only for John Keeton (o7) to level, making a 20 break in the process. John Christian (scr) won a black ball game 63-56 against Paul Cook (o21) to give the hosts the lead but Jason Bloomfield (o21) hit back with another black ball win, 51-45 against Mick Johnson (o28). It was left to Simon Parker (o7) to settle things with a 50-24 success.
Wayne Dent (o49) scored a 20 break to set Holbeach up for a 4-2 win at Consti I. Derek Beba (r7) made it 2-0 but a break of 33 by Stuart Atkin (o42) was not enough to save him from an 87-72 defeat to David Twelves (o7). Pete Ransom (o28) stepped up with a 64-35 to secure victory before Richard Geddes (r28) pulled one back with a 62-54 victory.
Holbeach E were 4-2 winners against Pyramid E thanks to wins from Phil Coaten (o14), Josh Stretton (r7) and James Crampton (o14). The visitors’ successes came courtesy of John Clapton (r7) and Adrian Sharpe (o35).
Five teams remain unbeaten in Division Three. Donington B lead the way after adding a 5-1 win against Consti A to their opening week 6-0 success. Gav Lewis (o7) won an opening black ball game 58-53 against Chris Hull (r21) but Paul Kent (r14) levelled and Paul Stewart (r7), Mick Clark (r14) and Darren Templeman (scr) turned the screw.
Clubmates Donington D are second after making it a pair of 4-2 wins by seeing off Boundary B thanks to wins from Michella George (r28), Paul White (r14) including a 22 clearance, and Dan Sawdy (scr). Paul Spittlehouse (o49) had a clearance of 34 in his win for Boundary, with Stuart Phillips (o7) winning a black ball game for the visitors.
Gosberton D also completed a 4-2 double, taking the advantage against Whittlesey B courtesy of victories from Dan Hanger (scr), Lyn Simmons (r21) and last man Paulo Gensiorskys (scr). John Skutela (scr) and Kerry Skutela (r28) won for the visitors.
Black ball wins from Jason Clarke (o7) and Steve Jennings (o35) secured a 5-1 win for Whittlesey A against Gosberton C. Andy Gebbie (r21) and Graeme Sawyer (o14) were their other victors with Mark Payne (o14) notching the consolation.
Consti J got their season up and running with a 4-2 victory over Gosberton B thanks to wins in the first three frames from Les Andrew (o7), Trev Braybrook (r14) and Neville Vickers (r7). Simon Slinger (scr) and Stuart Ruskin (r7) pulled two back.
