Rawlinson backing Spalding United’s strikers to catch fire ahead of Marske visit

Confident Spalding United boss Chris Rawlinson has backed his goal-shy strikers to come good ahead of Saturday’s visit of high-flying Marske United (3pm).

The Tulips chief watched on as his side squandered a host of golden chances at Wisbech Town on Bank Holiday Monday, before they eventually settled for a 1-1 draw at the Fenland Stadium.

That stalemate made it three 1-1 draws from as many Evo-Stik NPL East Division games so far this season.

Rawlinson feels that his side deserve to have at least two more points than they currently boast, but is sure that the results will turn when his side discover their killer instinct.

He’s backing front two Leon Mettam and Tom Siddons to get double figures this year and hopes they begin to fire at the Sir Halley Stewart Playing Field this Saturday.

“We’ve not been scraping draws,” insisted Rawlinson. “We should be at least two points better off – but there’s an argument that we could have won all three.

“Last season we were very attritional. This year, we’re creating a lot of chances.

“It’s not just the forwards missing chances, we’ve not been clinical enough as a team.

“But all strikers do go through barren periods. Both Leon and Tom bring so much to the team, be it linking play up or leading the line as a target man.

“They’ll both come good and I’d be amazed if both didn’t get double figures.

“We’re frustrated as a club that we’ve not won in the league yet. But we’ve also not lost – and if we can beat Marske, it looks like a very decent start.”
