Ravens take flight with debut album

A South Lincolnshire goth rock duo have released their debut album ahead of a first show in Spalding next month.

Paradox of Ravens, which comprises of Sara Pattern and Anne Hunt, has recorded and released their album Edge of Darkness this year.
They describe their music as a ‘dark gothic approach with a distinct 80s feel’.
The pair met at a meeting for trans people only last year.
Sarah, who is from Spalding and works for the town’s branch of Mencap, sings the classically trained music Anne creates.
“I naturally knew she had a voice,” says Anne, who is from Sleaford and previously played in bands that have supported China Crisis and Roman Holiday. “She was humming along to music I was playing at this meeting I was at and I knew she had potential.
“It’s been about developing her singing and testing chords.
“It’s just grown and grown from there.”
Sarah says her voice still surprises her.
“With me being trans I was a bit shocked at the sound of it and what’s happened,” she said. “I’m incredibly proud of what we’ve achieved.”
While Anne writes most of the lyrics, Sarah helps particularly on the last song of the album Rosary which details the last day she spent with her son James Patten who died aged 22 from muscular dystrophy.
“It’s a debilitating condition and by the end he could only move his fingers,” said Sarah. “One night we had the most wonderful conversation about everything. The next morning he died.
“I’ve always wondered if he knew that was going to be his last day.
“The song is about that and a celebration of his life.”
While Sarah is a huge Marillion fan Anne says she doesn’t listen to new music.
“I was fortunate enough to meet my hero Elton John once and we had a discussion about how original he was, but he told me no-one is original in music. There’s always going to be influences.
“I try not to be influenced by others. I just like good melodies and try to write ear-worms.”
Paradox of Ravens have already been getting requests to play up and down the country with one coming from the recently reopened Royal Mail Cart in Spalding.
They play there on Sunday, October 19.
Edge of Darkness is available to buy at record stores including Uptown Vinyl in Baytree Garden Centre.
There’s also a Paradox Of Ravens group on Facebook.
