Progress on second phase of Spalding relief road

Residents will be able to have a say on the next stage of a Spalding relief road when a consultation is launched later this year.

The public will be asked their views on the route of phase two of the Western Relief Road, which aims to connect Spalding Common and Pinchbeck Road, in November, alongside a consultation on the district’s Local Plan.
The first phase will start at a new roundabout at Spalding Common to another new roundabout on a yet-to-be-developed part of the Holland Park estate.
That section is expected to open in 2016/17.
The next phase will extend the road further north to bisect Horseshoe Road and Bourne Road at yet to be agreed points and finally join Spalding Road, possibly near to the Enterprise Way junction.
The overall cost of the new road will be in the region of £100million.
The cost includes the construction of three bridges – two going over the railway track and another crossing Vernatt’s Drain.
The aim is to alleviate traffic congestion around the town.
Jonathan Wickham, senior project leader at Lincolnshire County Council, said: “The county council is continuing to work with South Holland District Council on our aspirations to deliver a full western relief road for Spalding.
“This work is being done alongside the development of the South East Lincolnshire Local Plan.
“By linking the two pieces of work it can be ensured that the transport infrastructure, needed to support the forecast growth of the area, can be delivered.
“We are currently considering route options for the northern section of the relief road, and the public will be able to comment on these through a formal public consultation in November, alongside the Local Plan public consultation.”
