Podium double at Cadwell Park keeps Spalding’s Molsom second in Caterham standings

Spalding racer Andy Molsom remains second in the Caterham Graduates Racing Club championship after a strong showing at Cadwell Park last week.

The South Holland speedster secured second places in both races over the weekend at the Louth circuit.
Qualifying on the Saturday went without a hitch, as Molsom sealed second place on the grid for both of Sunday’s races.

As the lights went out for the start of the 20-minute race, Molsom got too much wheelspin and dropped a place before the first corner.

The following lap he ensured that he got a good exit onto the Park Straight and, using the slipstream, passed Barrett to regain second place.

By this time, leader Haynes had already got a three-second advantage and Molsom couldn’t catch him and was forced to settle for second. But he had pulled a big eight-second advantage over third place.

The longer 25-minute race had Molsom concerned about the start, but he didn’t need to worry as he got off to a flier, immediately taking the lead of the race with the rest of the pack falling in behind.

The lead was short lived though, with Haynes slipstreaming him down Park Straight to take over at the front.

Molsom pushed but had no answer for the rapid Haynes. Instead, a race-long battle of wits with Barrett for second on the road took place.

The Spalding ace ensured that he had a great exit onto both straights on every lap, keeping second place at the chequered flag.

Molsom said: “I have struggled getting this car off the line without too much wheelspin, so that made my job harder. Unfortunately, Haynes was too good today for me to make an impact, and second place was the best I could achieve.

“The second race was more tactical, I got a great start – the first time in this car, but Haynes was able to drive away again.

“The car behaved impeccably due to the attention by Pete and Ryan of 7 Works Automotive from Biggleswade.”

The next round is at Knockhill on June 4/5.
