Players lining up an ace new base

An 81-year-old says she fears not reaching her next birthday unless the tennis group she’s a part of finds a new home.

For the last decade a group of around 14 to 20 pensioners have met at 2pm on Mondays to play the sport with smaller nets and a soft ball at the Castle Sports Complex.

With it due to close next month, they say they currently have nowhere to go.

“I’m 81 and I play it because it helps me with my arthritis,” said Audrey Smith. “I find I’m really worried if I stop this then a might not make 82.

“As soon as you start running around your heat is working and you get that fitness.

“I’m not being over dramatic, that’s how I see it as when I don’t play this tennis which is easier on the joints then that’s when my flare ups happen.”

The group are now looking for a replacement venue in or around Spalding, preferably one that has two courts to allow as many as possible to play at the same time.

They’ve found a venue in Holbeach but say it would be too far out to drive to in the winter.

They’d like to hear from anyone who may have a space they could use on Monday afternoons, which rules out places at schools such as the Peel Leisure Centre in Long Sutton.
Elizabeth Legg (72) has been playing for four years.

“I really enjoy it and the exercise helps my hips.

“I think the main though is the social aspect which is absolutely brilliant.

“We all get together when otherwise we might be on our own.”
