Plaque adorns Red Lion Hotel to mark Jimi Hendrix’s stay in Spalding

The fourth Spalding and District Civic Society blue plaque has been put up – and commemorates legendary guitarist Jimi Hendrix’s visit to the town.

Hendrix stayed at The Red Lion Hotel in Market Place in May 1967 after the Barbecue gig at the Bulb Auction Halls in Winfrey Avenue, which attracted 4,000 fans.

The unveiling ceremony was performed by another on the set that night – local band Sounds Force 5, including Rob Munton who had travelled from Australia for the occasion.

The plaque was funded by the civic society, Nigel Wilkins (Red Lion), Colin Ward (Sounds Force 5) and Pinchbeck and Surfleet district councillor Liz Sneath.

A large crowd to see the plaque’s unveiling last Friday was told that plans are afoot to mark the 50th annivesary of the Barbecue gig, in 2017.
