Peterborough Saxons looking to build on their amazing 2015 in Sunday opener

The Peterborough Saxons, South Holland’s closest American Football team, kick-off their 2016 season on Sunday with a home clash against the Nottingham Caesars (2.30pm).

Based at Thorney Rugby Club, the Saxons have a host of South Holland-based players on their roster ahead of what promises to be an exciting season of gridiron.

Last season saw the Saxons finish with a 7-3 record as they reached the play-offs as number six seeds.

The low seeding ensured that they had a few tough road trips to pass in order to make the finals… but they absolutely aced both of them.

The quarter-final match up saw the Saxons travel to Glasgow to take on number three seeds the West Coast Trojans – and they came away with a 28-26 win.

Tougher still, the semi-final then saw the Saxons visit Manchester to take on number one seeds the Manchester Titans, where they came away with a superb 24-18 win.

That win gave the Saxons promotion from Division Two to Division One and secured a trip to Leeds for the final against number two seeds – and fellow divisional competitors – the Sandwell Steelers.

The long road trips in the play-offs and just a six-day break before the final turned out to be a step too far for the Saxons, as they lost 7-24 to a very good Steelers side.

With that disappointment firmly behind them, the Saxons are now ready for the new season in Division One Central.

Anybody interesting in supporting them is welcome to attend Thorney RFC, with entry free. The bar is also open and there will be a barbecue for fans to enjoy.
