Paul’s winning Welland Yacht Club treble secures super series success

The in-form Paul Burton enjoyed a clean-sweep of victories at Welland Yacht Club on Sunday.

Fresh from a victory the previous week, Burton took top spot in the Sunday Points Series race in the morning, before bagging a double in the final two races of the Afternoon Points Series.

That secured him overall glory in the Afternoon Points Series to cap a fine day of sailing.

There was plenty of wind for the second round of the Morning Points Series, with eight boats taking to the start line. Lucy Burton took the early lead from Tom Bell, followed by Paul Burton, Clive Herd and Richard Stedman, Alan Cox, Neil Tack and Rebecca Slator, with juniors Christopher and Joseph Seaborn completing the eight.

As they approached the top mark Bell had the lead from Paul Burton, with Herd-Stedman third.

Despite their valiant efforts, the two juniors retired and returned to the club house.

On the down wind run, Paul Burton managed to pass Bell, followed by Herd/Stedman, Tack/Slator and Lucy Burton.

On the final lap, disaster struck for Bell as he rounded the final mark with his mast snapping in two.

That left Paul Burton to take the win from Herd/Stedman, Tack/Slator and Lucy Burton.

The afternoon showcased the final two races of the Afternoon Points Series, with seven boats taking to the line this time.

Again, Lucy Burton was first off the line followed by Tack/Slator, with Herd/Stedman and Paul Burton neck and neck.

Cox was behind them, as were the two new juniors Freya and Samuel Willerton, who braved the windy conditions.

Paul Burton soon moved into first by enough margin to maintain the win after personal handicaps applied, edging Tack/Slator into second. The Herd/Stedman combination claimed third, with Cox fourth and Lucy Burton fifth.

With three wins under his belt, overall victory in the series was secured by Paul Burton ahead of the final race – making it more of a formality.

The pairing of Herd/Stedman electing to sit this one out, but the juniors were prepared for another go.

As expected, Paul Burton finished the day with another win from Tack/Slator in second, Cox in third and late entry Brian Cobb in fourth.

Behind Paul Burton in the final overall standings were Cox (second) and Tack/Slator (third).
