Nomination for textiles scheme

A successful scheme which saw tonnes of textiles recycled is in the running for an award.
South Holland District Council has been nominated for a National Recycling Award in the Best Partnership Project with the Public Sector category.
Earlier this year, its waste and recycling team joined up with the Salvation Army to launch a six month trial of textile kerbside collections covering 5,000 households.
The aim was to increase the amount of recyclable waste collected and also reduce the amount of textiles sent for disposal.
The scheme proved a resounding success and more than 15 tonnes of material was collected with 77 per cent suitable for reuse. Material that wasn’t suitable for reuse was recycled.
The project has since been extended to more areas in South Holland.
Roger Gambba-Jones, portfolio holder for waste management, said: “We are delighted to be nominated for this prestigious award.
“The trial resulted in several tonnes of waste being diverted from disposal, which not only saved thousands of pounds but also produced an income of over £3,000.
“We will be reviewing whether to offer it permanently in the future.”
Award winners will be announced in London on July 1.
