More offers of hope at charity

A service that offers advice to those struggling with their senses is the latest to hold sessions at a Holbeach charity.

Lincolnshire Sensory Services will be at Boxes of Hope every three months, offering advice to those who need it.
It joins a host of services that have sessions that anyone can drop in to including Citizens’ Advice, Barclays Bank and energy advice.
Mo Birkwood, of Lincolnshire Sensory Services, says it offers information and advice on deafness and hearing loss including on equipment available, help to clean and retube hearing aids and replace NHS batteries for free.
“We see people all the time who need help and it’s just about getting the help they need,” she said. “It’s initially every three months but we hope to make it more regular if the need is there.”
The next sessions are on March 19, June 16, September 27 and December 10.
The Citizens’ Advice sessions have proved so popular that organiser Maxine Candler now attends the High Street base of Boxes of Hope three days a week.
Her remit in particular is energy.
“It’s about making sure people are getting what they’re entitled to,” Maxine said. “We’ve seen a lot of people come in who are struggling to heat their homes but there is help out there for them.”
Boxes of Hope also stepped up when two homes were destroyed by fire from a stray firework on New Year’s Day.
Donations came flooding in for those affected.
“It was so wonderful to see how much support for them there was,” said the woman behind it, Mandy Baxter. “We came in specially on New Year’s Day and there were people pulling up all the while to drop bits off.
“I think they were overwhelmed with the response.”
l Meanwhile Boxes of Hope receptionist Carol Houlden (below( says she was overwhelmed by the responce after attempting to walk a mile every month.
She raised £1,385 for Breast Cancer Now.
It follows her own battle against the condition.
“I was absolutely amazing,” said Carol (pictured below) who lives in Whaplode. “I can’t believe people were so generous.
“The support I had from everybody was fantastic.
“It was overwhelming.”
