The future of a town centre policing initiative is in the spotlight as the Town Board funding comes to an end.
The board joined forces with South Holland District Council and the police to instigate extra patrols in Spalding town centre following reports of anti social behaviour and drug dealing.
It added £40,000 to the finance pot to help pay for the extra patrols which have seen an apparent reduction in anti social behaviour, particularly around the Sheep Market.
But the funding came to an end on January 31.
Leader of South Holland District Council Nick Worth said the scheme had definitely proved itself worthwhile.
“Hot Spot policing has made a real difference to the feel of the town centre and has clearly had a positive effect on anti social behaviour, which was a clear priority,” he said this week.
“The interaction between the police and the public while on the beat definitely helps that feeling of being safe.
While we await the detailed statistics, before a decision to renew is decided upon, what we don’t want is a long break until the next contract is renewed – assuming it will be,” he added.
The Town Board is set to hold a meeting on Monday when all the relevant statistics should be available.
“Following the completion of the Hot Spot policing pilot, Lincolnshire Police and the office of the Police and Crime Commissioner are compiling a final stage report to the board to provide evidence of impact,” said a statement from the Town Board.
“Through the extensive consultation we’ve carried out since 2024, the board knows that safety and security are a top priority for the people of Spalding and will be coming together for an urgent interim session to consider the findings of the report and next steps.
“We know from the interim report published last year that residents have valued an enhanced and visible policing presence. However, the board will consider this within the context of delivering the best outcome for the town, and the best possible value for money.
“We look forward to receiving the final report from the police and the PCC and will make an announcement as soon as possible,” the statement concluded.
The hot spot policing funded overtime for existing officers to make visible patrols and reassure members of the public after concerns about the town centre.
