Molsom left disappointed despite a double podium at Rockingham Speedway

Spalding speed merchant Andy Molsom clinched two podiums as the Caterham Graduates Championship arrived at Rockingham Motor Speedway for rounds five and six.

Finishes of second and third leave the South Holland racer, of Molsom and Associates Optometrists, at the top of the driver standings in the ‘Supers’ section.

Qualifying went well for Molsom in Corby, as he clinched front row starts for each race. Indeed, race two was his third pole position of the year.

Race one saw Molsom make a good start from second on the grid, but he was pushed soon down to third.

However, he re-took second after a few laps and then set about catching Ed Benson for the lead. Despite numerous side-by-side battles, Molsom couldn’t quite make a move stick and finished the race in a solid second place.

The second race was more closely fought from the off. A good start from pole saw Molsom lead for the first ten laps, despite constant pressure from Benson and Briant.

Once they caught the slower Classic class though, Molsom was unlucky and dropped two places to third, where he finished the race on the 14th lap.

As well as the two podiums, Molsom also completed the fastest lap in the first race, breaking his existing lap record by half a second in the process.

The racer said: “Rockingham is a technical circuit with some challenges, and has some great corners.

“It was a solid weekend, and the car was flawless again – massive thanks go to Rockey Racing for their car preparation.

“It was a good weekend, however I was a little disappointed about not winning the second race after a such a great start.

“But that’s Caterham racing, the cars are so equal that the races are usually very closely fought.”

  • Supers standings: 1st Andy Molsom 90pts; 2nd Toby Briant 86pts; 3rd Harry Cramer 81pts.
