Memorable Scumrun inspires West Pinchbeck father of diabetes sufferer for re-run

The fantastic experience of a 3,000-mile fundraising rally has inspired a West Pinchbeck man to do more.

Paul “Diesel” Robinson completed Scumrun with pals Mahroof Choudary and Bradley Hueso.
The idea of the annual event is that participants buy a car for the rally for less than £500. Any amount of money can then be spent doing it up.

Diesel’s “Team Wild” paid £250 for a Fiat Multipla, which performed perfectly well over the five days.
Teams met up in Dover and then found out en route where the next overnight stop was to be. This year’s rally took in Dunkirk, Nancy, Nice, Monaco, Zurich and Brussels.

The rally took participants on a memorable trip around some of the Monaco Grand Prix circuit.

Diesel said: “We did about 3,056 miles from Spalding and back and spent about £470 on fuel and tolls.
“We had a lot of help towards the fuel bill from local businesses including Royal Taxis and SJM Auto Engineers and we’re very grateful to everyone who helped with sponsorship.”

This year’s charity beneficiary was JDRF (Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation), which made £126,000 from the 120 teams involved.
Team Wild’s total is currently £2,111. The friends’ sponsorship site, which is still open for donations, is www.justgiving.com/dieseladammroof

Diesel found out about the rally through JDRF. His daughter Faith suffers from Type 1 diabetes.

He said: “Scumrun was an absolutely amazing experience. It’s a lot of miles but we saw some great sights.
“With all the teams, it was like one big family.”

The Fiat will be auctioned or raffled off on October 24 at the annual JDRF Ball in Spalding which wife Gemma organises.
