A brilliant unbeaten 93 from Pakistani all-rounder Hafiz Majeed failed to inspire Spalding Town to a Rutland League Division Six victory over Newborough 2nd on Sunday.
Coming in at number seven at St Martin’s Road, Majeed smashed six sixes and six fours to propel Spalding to 154 batting first.
Hosts Newborough knocked the runs off in 41.3 overs with three wickets to spare, despite 3-36 from young Jon Manton.
Majeed rescued Spalding’s innings from near-disaster. Only Harry Decamps (26) joined him in making any kind of score as five made ducks.
Nick Lawton (3-15) was the pick of the Newborough bowlers.
Their reply was more of a team effort, with all but two of the nine batsmen used making ten or more.
Joe Millers (29 not out) played the key innings as his side edged home in the 42nd over.
- Nine-man Ufford Park stunned Long Sutton 2nd in Rutland League Division Six as they won a low-scoring game by six wickets.
Dan Oldfield top scored with 40 as Sutton were bowled out for just 86 in 40.4 overs, with Morgen Turner (3-17) and Charlie Agnew (3-12) the chief destroyers.
Steven Milnes (1-15) and Tommy Sayer (1-29) took early wickets in Ufford’s reply, but Agnew (11 not out) and Jon Bigham (22 not out) eased Ufford to 87-2 in 22.3 overs.
- Moulton Harrox 2nd were also beaten in Rutland League Division Six.
Joe Broomfield (14) top scored in their 65 all out against Uffington 2nd on Sunday – a total knocked off in just 9.2 overs.
