Spalding United’s former professional winger Marcus Maddison has successfully launched a fundraising page to help him have a career-saving operation.
Maddison, played for Peterborough United and Bolton Wanderers before quitting the game at 27 due to mental health issues, peformed a u-turn to join the Tulips in the summer when they were managed by former Posh team-mate Gaby Zakuani.
However, he’s been sidelined with a crippling knee injury for most of the season and hasn’t been seen in a Spalding squad since the 2-1 home defeat against Cambridge City back in late September.
Maddison has also spoken of his intentions to return to the EFL at some point – but has now launched a GoFundMe page to try and pay for a knee operation.
He says it will cost him £3,000 and that he’d never be able to run again without repairing the damage to his meniscus.
On his Instagram page, Maddison said: “Hi guys this post is reaching out which is hard for me to do but I have nowhere else to turn.
“After a year out sorting myself out mentally this operation on my knee is my last hurdle, without it I will never run again never mind play football.”
As we went to press on Tuesday night, Maddison’s GoFundMe appeal had surpassed its target, with a total of £3,640 raised and plenty of well wishes received.
