Long Sutton player/boss: ‘Plenty of positives for us next season’

Long Sutton Athletic player/manager Matt Cawthorn would love to continue in the role next season.

Cawthorn, who recently succeeded Danny Goddard at the ChromaSport Peterborough League Division One side, made the declaration after a 6-3 defeat at Wisbech Town Reserves on Wednesday (April 13) – a result which left him disappointed but not too downbeat.

Tommy Treacher fired the Magpies ahead on five minutes after a great run by Jonny Allen, but the home side hit back to lead 3-1 at the break.

Cawthorn changed the formation, but Sutton quickly fell further behind.

Matty Wayman pulled a goal back for the visitors, but more errors cost them dearly. Martin Ward had the last word for Sutton, unleashing an unstoppable shot for their third goal.

Cawthorn, who singled out central midfielder Wayne Congreve for praise, said: “It was disappointing really as our keeper didn’t have too much to do other than to pick the ball  out of the net.

“I don’t think we have been outplayed in the games I have been manager.

“We take a lot of positives and it will stand us in good stead for next season, where I would definitely love to continue.”
