Long Sutton (104) lost to Boston (107-7) by 3 wickekts
An intriguing encounter at Paradise Field on Saturday saw Sutton nearly pull off a remarkable victory against a strong Boston side.
Sutton started the South Lincs and Border League Premier Division game promisingly as Phil Barnes and Chris Booth looked comfortable against the ineffective Boston seamers.
This paved the way for the entire match as once Boston introduced their slow bowlers, the game shifted completely as both openers, Barnes (10) and then Booth (39) both fell sparking a typical Long Sutton collapse.
The middle order disintegrated as no one was able to support Paul Edgeller (21) who eventually holed out as Sutton reached a meagre 104, having been 63-0.
In reply, Skipper Matt Bull made the bold move of opening with slow bowlers after Boston’s success.
Jake Burton utilised the conditions perfectly, removing Boston’s top three in a superb spell of 3-26 from his 12 over allocation. The part-time spin of Edgeller also snared a wicket as Boston began to look flustered chasing such a small total.
Skipper Bull (2-13) and Ian Morris (1-24) also picked up wickets, but solid batting from Boston’s lower order saw them get across the line.
- Sutton’s premier Sunday side were handed a heavy 151-run defeat by Ketton in Rutland League Division Five.
Batting first, Joseph Barter (60) and Robin Vitas (50) both made half-centuries in Ketton’s 214-6. Burton (3-43) and Edgeller (2-36) were the pick of the bowlers, with an Aaron John run out the other wicket to fall.
Sutton weren’t allowed to gain any initiative with the bat as Ketton’s young Australian Jordan Ryan (5-13) bowled superbly, dismissing Jamie Taylor (1), John (10), Ben Smith (16) and Edgeller (0) in fairly quick succession before also removing Dan Oldfield (6) to pick a five wicket haul.
Sutton never recovered and were eventually bowled out for 63.
