Lincolnshire CCC secure place at Unicorns T20 finals despite suffering first defeat

Lincolnshire CCC progressed to the Finals Day of the Unicorns T20 competition despite losing to Cheshire at New Brighton on Sunday.

The County Club required one point from their two matches against Cheshire to ensure that they won their group.

In the first match, Cheshire won the toss and elected to field.

That proved the right call, as an indifferent batting display by Lincolnshire saw them dismissed for 109 in the 20th over.

Only Louis Kimber (21) and Matt Fowler (20) troubled the bowlers with solid knocks and this below par score always looked likely to be beaten.

David Wainwright, with 3-10, was Cheshire’s most successful bowler on the day.

In reply, hosts Cheshire reached their target in relative comfort with 13 balls to spare for the loss of just four wickets.

The second scheduled match was abandoned without a ball being bowled and the one point that Lincolnshire obtained was enough to see them top their group.

They will be joined in the Finals Day at Wormsley on August 26 by Buckinghamshire, Dorset and Hertfordshire.

The County Club now turn their attention to the Eastern Division championship when, as reigning champions, they face Cumberland in a three-day fixture at Sleaford CC commencing on Sunday (11am start).

The Lincolnshire team for this fixture is: C Wilson (capt), M Fowler, C Free, D Freeman, N Keast, T Keast, J Kendall, L Kimber, A Rafiq, B Shafayat and A Willerton.

League fixtures: Unicorns Championship Eastern Division 2019: July 7 – Staffordshire (a); July 21 – Suffolk (h – Cleethorpes); August 4 – Norfolk (a); August 18 – Hertfordshire (a); September 1 – Bedfordshire (h – Grantham).
