LETTERS – Why pay for garden waste service?

Can you find out why ratepayers in South Holland should have to pay for garden waste collection (www.sholland.gov.uk/gardenwaste), when council tax goes up every year?

I got a leaflet (how much did that cost to print and deliver?) through my door promoting this service (doesn’t state you have to pay on it, though – and is £65 per annum when you check it out on SHDC website).

Surely this should be covered in our council tax bill? At least then we’d get a bit more value for money.

Or is SHDC just raking (forgive the pun) more money in to dish out more £1,000 tablets to its freeloading, more or less useless (but good at spending/wasting our money on nonsense projects) councillors?

Not everyone in outlying villages can get to the tip (the elderly, infirm etc), so how are they supposed to get rid of their garden waste (and other waste that doesn’t go in bins) without paying through the nose to have it removed for them?

And these are the very people that cannot afford yet more cost.

We used to get free skips in villages every month for people to dispose of such waste etc, but that was withdrawn a couple of years ago and, guess what, fly-tipping has multiplied in the area – which costs the council to clean up.

If a free service was supplied again, surely it would benefit everyone all round, and the county would be a bit cleaner?

It would be interesting to see what SHDC councillors have to say about this – but then I’m sure they’ve got a well-rehearsed, round-the-houses, hot air speech ready to ‘justify’ this cost.

All that hot air can’t be helping with climate change, though.
