Whilst visiting Carter’s Park in Holbeach on June 16 with my dog, I heard a man shouting.
I walked towards the noise and there was a very drunk man, who was “supervising” a toddler in the play area. His voice was incredibly loud and he was swilling beer from a can. He was shouting at the child, not maliciously but almost incoherently, telling her how great mates they were. The child did not utter a sound.
I regretted not bringing my mobile and continued my walk, assuming someone would ring the police as the child could not have been properly supervised.
I carried on with my walk but you could hear this man’s voice all over the park. Finally I came to the council building which I know houses CCTV as previously I have been admonished by a council worker, who approached me for not having my dog on a lead.
I asked him if he had approached the man or phoned the police. He had done neither.
I told him I thought the child was in danger as he was very unsteady on his feet. He gave the impression he did not want to get involved and said he had previously seen the man and child and it was not the drunk’s child, but apparently he “was looking after it for his mate”.
Why on earth would any parent give their child to a person in that condition?
Shame on the council worker who fled to admonish a pensioner who had the audacity of walking her little dog without a lead. Obviously a lot more dangerous than a drunk looking after some poor child.
I sincerely hope someone did call the police but somehow I doubt it as “not wanting to get involved” seems to be the modern mantra.
By the way, when I saw the man in the park, it was 9am so when on earth did he start drinking to get into that state?
