Spalding Gateway gets busier week by week.
After a quiet reopening in December, when a handful of previous members returned to the group, people with learning disabilities are returning to the Gateway Club.
Each week sees a number of regular faces supplemented by a number of different people.
People with a learning disability have a reduced intellectual ability and difficulty with everyday activities – for example household tasks, socialising or managing money – which affects someone for their whole life.
People with a learning disability tend to take longer to learn and may need support to develop new skills, understand complicated information and interact with other people.
Consequently the Gateway Club has plenty of volunteers who are able and willing to support this group by providing activities such as crafts, snooker and even just colouring for some of the less able.
However the group has just benefited from a grant from Active Lincolnshire through Sport England’s Together Fund, which will see activities such as new age kurling, Boccia and darts introduced shortly.
The group meets at Broad Street Methodist Church Hall, Spalding, on Fridays from 7pm-9pm and is open to any one with a learning disability and/or a carer or family member if necessary.
As it was too late to organise a party for Christmas, one is being arranged for early February.
