It is gratifying that so many people see the good sense in having a safer route, the New River cycleway, from Little London Bridge to the ever-growing facilities around The Tulip Queen.
We hope Lincolnshire County Council can agree on who owns the land; this disagreement is currently an obstacle to progress.
To those who object because there would be littering, I would point out the litter on either side of the A16 between Spalding and Boston. Would that be a reason to close the A16?
It is easy to find reasons not to implement practical measures – perhaps that it why South Holland is being held back by inertia. Some years ago the Civic Society received £7,000 of Lottery money for a Spalding Riverside Walk with information boards, which would have been a good offer for visitors to our town. Because of inertia among the local authorities, the lottery grant had to be returned.
If litter were to be an issue on the proposed New River cycleway, bins could easily be provided at strategic intervals as on the Daffodil Walk.
There is a special kind of bin, which we could obtain from Denmark, with a larger opening and set at an angle so that cyclists can dispose of their litter as they ride. Our European friends have brilliant ideas!
And can we rise above the Lincolnshire mindset that says “if it isn’t for motorists, we aren’t interested.”
Every driver who leaves his/her car at home and uses active travel options creates more space for the remaining motorists.
