LETTER: Why spend so much on lights?

I fail to understand South Holland District Council’s logic in spending £70k of public money on the town’s Christmas lighting.
The town is dead for shopping simply because everyone goes to Springfields.
The only thing there is in the town centre are drunken vagrants, pigeons, and rats.
I can think of many other projects SHDC can spend money that are far more suitable such as town wardens to keep the vagrants at bay.
The sad thing is Spalding could be such a nice place to visit which it was when we first moved here in 2016 and it’s simply become a town some people no longer feel safe visiting.
I blame SHDC for some of its woes including the people in power who are not fit for purpose.
The problem here is, and it’s endemic in local councils in the UK, local councillors have no idea how businesses run and I speak from experience.
