LETTER: What has happened to libraries?

What has happened to our libraries?

All the speculation about them shutting down/reducing hours of opening etc are one thing, however, they appear to have become meeting places.

Gone are the days of large silence signs and being shushed if you accidental spoke in a loud or lively voice.

Now there are gaggles of young children, sitting round an adult (presumably a teacher) shouting out questions and generally making a noisy nuisance of themselves.

Why do this in a library and not in a classroom?

There are also the Knit and Natters, which generally consist of ladies of a certain age, gossiping, whilst knitting.

It used to be so nice to get out of a noisy town and seek silence in a library.
