LETTER: Thanks to couple who gave me lift

On the morning of November 23, I set out from Fleet Hargate intending to catch the 9.38 bus to Holbeach intending to continue to Springfields after visiting one shop. I had a midday appointment at Springfields.

The bus didn’t come.

The next one was 10.08 which was very late around 10.20.

From Holbeach I waited for the 10.17, 10.52, 11.17 – none arrived. The next one was due at 11.52. My feet were getting very cold.

Realising midday was fast approaching and I had no way to contact my friend, I tried hitching a lift.

After about 40 vehicles passed my thumb, one stopped. It was a Polish couple who said hitchhiking was normal in Poland, but unusual here.

How right they were! No British Christmas spirit at all. But the car was lovely and warm and I arrived at Springfields a few minutes before midday.

So thank you very much to that lovely Polish couple. Happy Christmas.
