I read with interest the front page of the Daily Mirror (April 20) about registering to vote.
Last year I used the Government website to apply to be registered to vote. I also filled in a nomination form to stand in the election for a parish councillor for the Hurn ward of Holbeach.
In 2005 I stood as an Independent in the General Election for the constituency of South Holland and the Deepings.
I was excluded from the parish council contest as I was not a registered elector, my registration was not completed because I had mistakenly “clicked” March not January as my month of birth.
I am still not registered as they insisted on proof as who I am even though I told them what the mistake was. I recently received an email regarding proof even though I do not live at that address (home is now a green Skoda, yes, I am homeless).
The question is: if someone had my details and had correctly entered these into the Government website what checks would have been made then and what proof would have been required?
Or would the registration have been accepted, the right to vote sent to the address and someone could have then used my vote?
