LETTER: No political constraints

It is to Mr Hunt’s credit that he is reading candidates’ leaflets in order to decide who is worthy of his vote, however, he has misunderstood what group means.

It would be unrealistic to expect all 37 councillors to attend meetings or sit on committees without engaging in discussions and exchanging different views on complex issues.

The difference between a group and a politically-motivated party is that they have a whip system to ensure central or local political directives are followed when they vote.

Independents having carefully considered various views expressed by constituents and in discussion with fellow councillors are always free to vote whichever way they consider is best for the constituents on their wards or for the district as a whole.

Independents never have anyone instructing them how to vote.

I would ask Mr Hunt is he satisfied with the way our district has developed over the past 15 years with the Conservatives Party’s absolute control?

If not I would suggest he again considers if he would be better served by electing Independent members free of political constraints to help to bring a more democratic balance to our council.
