The referendum was not just about the EU. The debate now is still about much more and the Backstop is irrelevant.
Little by little, by stealth or by accident, our democracy has been stolen, if we ever owned it anyway. The power of kings, the Church and the aristocracy has been done away with but replaced by a small but all powerful overclass, of politicians, the media, big business, the rich, by the old worker’s unions, the civil service and by the educators. Left or Right are now just different hands of the same monster.
Quite how we get it back I don’t know but Brexit does provide a way forward for the people, whilst Remain ensures the inexorable demise of true democracy, freedom of expression, self reliance, lower taxes, with proper safeguards for the genuine needy or disadvantaged and it distances us even more from the levers of power that control our lives.
In the name of efficiency, and it’s worth remembering that the most efficient form of government is a dictatorship, centralisation has taken the people far away from those that govern us. Rule from Brussels is the ultimate result of a long journey, we would be paying that overclass very well to take orders from far away, whilst they do very little themselves. Anyone who doubts this has only to observe the inability of the establishment to deal with Brexit, they have clearly already lost the necessary skills.
I will continue to do what I can to fight for a genuine Brexit and that’s not the deal on offer from Mrs May. South Holland had the second highest
Leave vote in England. Brexit is the most important political issue since the last war. There is however something that we all have to understand. This process of long drawn out battles in Parliament and the nation is going to end. Sometime hopefully soon, one side will prevail or there will be an uncomfortable compromise.
For the sake of us all and our children we badly need to come together again and put the present anger and bitterness to one side. The situation at the moment is frightening. The battle is causing collateral damage, the county is in turmoil and being harmed by our squabbling. We have to bring matters to a conclusion and move on as soon as possible, not kicking the can down the road or delaying.
We do still have a democratic way to express our opinions and that’s through the ballot box and by lobbying our elected representatives. We have reached the point where we need to use the only civilised alternative to the sort of things being seen in Paris and elsewhere in Europe, where people are being injured and property damaged.
Every election matters so above all that entails voting tactically for people not parties, or sometimes even by abstaining.
