LETTER: Beware ‘unseen’ cost of EU membership

Mr Wall`s lengthy treatise on the value of the EU system of payments to our farmers (Letters, May 5) tells just part of the story.

The “Single Farm Payment” system is so complex, not only do the farmers struggle to understand it but also the Rural Payments Agency who are failing to administer it properly in this country. As such, fines imposed by the EU total £642million to date, and are rapidly rising to £1 billion.

This is one of the “unseen” costs of EU membership and is yet another bill to be added to the National Debt to become the responsibility of our children and grandchildren. How much simpler and cheaper for this country to leave the EU and devise our own system of payments to farmers.
