LETTER: A lovely piece of architecture

As a furtherance to your recent news item regarding planning matters in connection with the former Royal Mail Sorting Office in The Crescent I have attached a photo image of the building circa 1910 which once stood on the site of the current structure which your readers may find of interest.
Also seen in the image is what was the Christian Association and Literary Institute building built in 1871 and latterly remembered by many locals as The Geest Club, which is also currently the subject of planning matters.
The Literary Institute building shows a few architectural features which at some point in history were removed – this too in its own right is a fine building and deserves to be cherished.
The Spalding United Free Methodist Church was built on the site of a previous Methodist Chapel between 1877-1878/9 with funding being mainly raised by local subscription.
In 1955 the church closed following the discovery of building faults combined with reorganisation within the ranks of the Methodist Church which in turn led to its demolition – a sad end to what was a lovely piece of local architecture.
