Jean’s special toast to The Queen

A Holbeach 90-year-old is looking to toast the Queen’s Jubilee in the same mug she drank from during her coronation.

Jean Sauntson was an enthusiastic 20-year-old trainee assistant cook at Holbeach Bank school in 1952 and decorated the hall for all the residents from Holbeach Bank and Holbeach Clough.

She cycled to the school at 7am to meet the baker who delivered 300 bread buns bought with money raised through a fundraiser.

Jean has treasured memories of the day including being given a lift from the school to the Holbeach Clough playing field on the back of local farmer Ted Poll’s motorbike so, she could watch and participate in the games.

Jean also received a coronation mug along with all the children. The mug, still in Jean’s safe keeping, has now been brought out along with flags to celebrate the jubilee. Her mug is quite delicate but may be used if she can find some champagne to go in it!
