Knights’ winning run comes to an end in goalfests

Pinchbeck United’s good run of form in the Uhlsport United Counties League Premier Division came to an end as they experienced back-to-back defeats.
A 5-1 thrashing at Kimberley Miners Welfare on Saturday was followed by a gut-wrenching 3-2 loss at Wisbech Town on Tuesday, the winner coming in the 94th minute from Chris Ward after the Knights thought they’d at least rescued a point through Andre Williams’ 87th minute screamer from distance.
In both games Pinchbeck held an early lead through Spencer Weir-Daley.
It came in the sixth minute on Tuesday against a Wisbech side managed by former Spalding United striker Leon Mettam and packed with former Tulips.
But Momodou Janneh equalised in the 13th minute before Christian Assombalonga put Wisbech ahead on the half hour.
That’s how it stayed until the late drama sparked by Williams’ shot in the corner of the net from 20-yards.
It followed a tough day on Saturday as Lewis Thorogood’s side were hit for five by Kimberley.
The Knights again took the lead through Weir-Daley and conceded the equaliser quickly five minutes later to James Shaw.
After Elliot Foster had a one-on-one well saved, Kimberley then dominated thereafter.
Tom Eccleshall made it 2-1 on 38 minutes before Shaw made it 3-1 in first half injury time.
Goals in the 54th minute from Jordan Wheatley and 60th from Louis Nicholson led to a 5-1 victory.
Assistant manager Mark Melson said: “It’s always easier to review when you have won.
“We will take the rough with the smooth.
“It would be easy to say we were poor, didn’t show up etc, but sometimes you are beaten by the better side which Kimberley were on the day and they deserved the three points.
“We have been having a good run of late so it was a result and performance we didn’t see coming.”
With Spalding United at home in the trophy, Pinchbeck United have a rare Sunday game this weekend.
They host Coventry Sphinx at the Sir Halley Stewart in a 1pm kick off.
