Spalding’s COVID Kindness Team are now officially among the Pride of Britain.
The group of volunteers set up to help the vulnerable in and around the town during the recent lockdown have been nominated for a Pride of Britain Award.
The awards are run by The Daily Mirror newspaper and the group are to be featured in the national newspaper soon.
The Spalding COVID Kindness Team was set up by Keira Williamson in March.
She’s been told “quite a few” local residents had nominated the team for the Pride of Britain award, though it’s not clear if the nomination refers to a particular category.
“I’m a little bit blown away to be honest.
“It’s just so lovely for all the team and the volunteers who’ve worked so hard.
“It’s great for everybody who has donated time, money or produce to the cause.
“It’s been such an amazing collective effort.
“Our intention wasn’t to be recognised, it was to help others, initially just picking up a few prescriptions, and it’s amazing to see what happens when people pull together.
“I’m just so glad that the community came together to do that.”
In total the Kindness Team have had 3,000 support requests, made 10,000 fresh fruit and vegetable packages and 1,000 care packages, thanks to a host of fantastic donations from local businesses.
They were boosted by more than 160 volunteers helping out.
“I want to say thank you to everyone who has volunteered or donated to the cause.”
The Spalding COVID Kindness Team is due to wind down and due to close in its current form by June 28.
But Keira says that talks are currently ongoing about a new community initiative, though the details of this are yet to be finalised.
