Keith takes top spot in Spalding Golf Club’s Tester Salver qualifier

Keith Hearn topped the leaderboard in Spalding Golf Club’s Tester Salver qualifier after shooting a score of 149 in his two rounds.

It was a strong showing from Hearne, who finished three shots clear of his nearest rival Charles Lacey (152) at the Surfleet course.

The scoring was pretty impressive all the way down to fifth place, with Richard McCrea (153), Daniel Hines (154) and Wayne Wallance (155) all very much in contention.

  • Spalding suffered a 3.5-1.5 defeat at Sutton Bridge in a clash that saw some emphatic wins for the home side.

Vic Davis and Maurice Crunkhorn (5&4) were the only Spalding winners, with Mike Crampton and John Camm halving.

However, Geoff Moyses and Geoff Skinner (5&4), Neil Wilkinson and Roy Blake (5&3) and David Halfteck and Peter Dewer (6&4) all lost.

  • Spalding 3rd got back to winning ways with a fine 5-1 success over Sandilands at Surfleet.

Wins came from Ian Ford and Greg Wright (4&2), Stu Parker and Rick Denton (3&2), Jake Lilley and Ben Lilley (5&3), Chris Wenham and Dougie Alexander (2up) and Andy Green and Lee Phillips (3&1). 

Ladies’ section: Some 33 ladies entered the Coronation Cup competition at Spalding Golf Club.

On a hot day, with the Surfleet course in superb condition, some good scores were recorded.

The winner was Sue Matthews with 40 Stableford points, which earned her a two-shot deduction in handicap.

Second place went to Jenny Van Gemeren (38 points) ahead of Christina Leggett (37 points) in third.

Both players also earned a one-shot handicap deduction for their efforts.

  • Spalding ladies drew a friendly clash with their counterparts from King’s Lynn 2-2 at the Surfleet course.

The wins came from Hannah Thorold and Margaret Barkway (4&3) and Jean White and Jennifer Pipe won (2&1), while Elizabeth Holbrook and Chris Vickers (3&2) and Anita Cross and Elaine Harrison (2&1) were both beaten.

  • A group of past lady captains met for a 13-hole Stableford competition at Spalding.

The event was organised by Paula Brown, the immediate past captain.

Millie Thorold emerged as the overall winner with 21 points, edging out Brown on countback. Lesley Williams took third place 20 points.

The competition was followed by an evening meal, which was enjoyed by all.

Seniors’ section: Spalding’s senior side edged to a narrow 4.5-3.5 win over rivals Sleaford at Surfleet.

Wins came from Michael Gould and Andy Ladbrook (2&1), Neil Wilkinson and Alan Pritchard (1up), Jim Dobson and Lester Pybus (1up) and Stephen Edward Leggett and Ray Andrew (2up),  while David Halfteck and Ron Rolfe halved.

Peter Bridge and Monty Brittain (2&1), Rod Hunt and Richard Edwards (2 down), Bernard Herbert and Tony Holbrook (2&1) lost.
