Jubilant Jones lands Overton Trophy title at Spalding Golf Club

Mark Jones got the better of 124 other players to lift Spalding Golf Club’s Overton Trophy on Saturday.

His score of 40 Stableford points was enough to edge Bob Ratcliffe (39 points) into second place at the Surfleet course.

Amazingly, the top five were separated by just two points with Simon Horton (39pts), Thomas Langford (39pts) and Phil Tweddell (38pts) placing third, fourth and fifth respectively.

  • Spalding’s Mixed Open attracted 124 entrants from across the region this year – and it was another successful event that was enjoyed by all.

The overall winners were Joe Scott (Burghley Park Golf Club) and Mairead Scott (Toft Hotel Golf Club) with a superb score 42 points.

Result – Newark 1 Spalding 6 (Peter Bridge and Dave Halfteck won 5&3, Shaun Gibson and Monty Brittain won 6&5, Bernard Herbert and Mike Gould won 4&3, Albert Jacobs and Rod Filby lost by 1, Jim Dobson and Cliff Edmondson won 2&1, Steve Leggett and Keith Holland halved, Tony Holbrook and Lester Pybus halved, John Beba and Brendan D’Abero won 4&2)

  • Kay Green got her hands on the September Medal title at Spalding Golf Club after braving tough conditions.

Some 33 ladies entered, with the scratch score out at 76. Green, a recent convert to golf, won with a nett 66 to cut her handicap by six. Ruth Atkins (75) and Carole Holland (76) completed the top three.

  • Sue Dewar and Gill Dewhurst won the Groom Cup foursomes bogey competition on level par.

Lesley Williams and Lynda Double (level) and Tracy Siddle and Mags Philby (also level) made up the top three.

  • Friendly result: Greetham Valley 2 Spalding 2. Winning pairs – Margaret Barkway and Gill Dewhurst (5&4), Jenny Wilson and Jean Wilkinson (3&1).
  • A total of 13 pairs of ladies entered the Daily Mail Foursomes competition – a foursomes stableford. The winners were Lynda Double and Elaine Hancock (37 points), with Tilly Garfoot and Eden Inglis second (35 points) ahead of Margaret Barkway and Christina Leggett in third.
