It’s a gr-eight showing as Spalding ladies turn out in memory of Billie

Eight ladies from Spalding Cycling Club took part in a nationwide women’s cycling event to honour the late Billie Fleming.

Taking part in the event were Sarah Bentley, Claire Thomas, Fiona Gurney, Becki Richards, Megan Kendal, Sophie Wright, Katie Wright and Nicky Ellis.

The Spalding girls set off from the Fisherman’s Arms in Pode Hole at 10.30am, for what was a social 22-mile ride around the local Fenland countryside.

The route was flat, with the riders thankful for the warm and sunny weather which they were lucky enough to have for the entire duration of the ride.

The group stayed together and kept a respectable pace, considering several of the group had not ridden a bike since last summer and some had very little experience of riding in a group.

They even managed to sweep past a slower group of cyclists in the best peleton fashion.

They eventually arrived back at the Fisherman’s Arms after 90 minutes in the saddle, before raising a glass to the legendary Billie afterwards.

The group were delighted to do their bit for Billie, who died in May 2014 – aged 100 – and has a unique place in the history of cycling.

In 1938, she cycled every day and set the women’s world record for the greatest distance cycled in a single year – a staggering 29,604 miles.
