Impressive Tigers ease to home win

Holbeach United 3
Great Yarmouth Town 0

Co-boss Simon Roberts was full of praise for his Holbeach United side as they soundly defeated Great Yarmouth Town 3-0 on Saturday.
Goals from Cal Davies (44), Harvey Robertson (47) and George Martin (87) gave the Tigers a second win on the spin in Thurlow Nunn League First Division North – moving them to within four points of a play-off position.
Davies gave Holbeach the lead with a penalty just before half-time at Carter’s Park, before Robertson doubled the lead only two minutes into the second period.
The points were sealed when sub Martin’s fine finish found the back of the net a few minutes before the final whistle.
It was another impressive display from Danny Clifton and Roberts’ side, with the latter feeling better is still to come.
Roberts said: “A 3-0 win for the Holbeach boys – and still I see there is better to come from this great group of players.
“Loving my time at Carter’s Park.”
Holbeach started the clash on the front foot and were unlucky not to go ahead inside two minutes when Fin Henderson rattled the bar with an effort.
Striker Kyle Compton also went close when his point-blank strike was well saved by away keeper Reuben Lane.
Defender Henderson was then forced to clear off the line before Robertson and Sam Carter went close at the other end.
The hosts deserved a goal for their first-half efforts and duly took the lead when Adrian Bilicz found Compton, who was fouled in the box.
Davies, never one to get too flustered, buried the spot-kick to give the hosts a narrow lead at the break.
The scoreline got way better for Holbeach early in the second period, however, with Robertson doubling their advantage following a top team move.
Davies’ excellent pass released John Yambasu and his ball delivered nicely to the back post was for Robertson to coolly convert to make it 2-0.
Yambasu was involved in the next two major incidents as he rattled the bar and was then brought down in the box, with strong penalty appeals waved away.
Despite their obvious frustrations, the Tigers remained in control of proceedings and went very close to making it 3-0 when sub Joe Millinson rifled a fine effort just over the bar.
It was another of the home side’s subs who settled the game, though.
With just three minutes left to play, Martin steered a fine finish into the corner to give Holbeach another impressive home victory and secure back-to-back league wins for only the second time so far this season.
Next up for the Tigers is another home game this Saturday, with Norwich CBS the visitors to Carter’s Park (3pm).
It’s the first of four December fixtures for them as they bid to end the year in the play-offs.
Norwich lost 5-2 on Saturday but will provide a stern test, as they currently sit in fourth place, some four points ahead of the Tigers in ninth.
The pair drew the reverse fixtures 3-3 back in early October.
Tigers: Rigby, Nicholson, Robertson (Johnson), H Henderson (Oldham), F Henderson, Carter, Bilicz, Wirkowski (Millinson), Davies, Compton (Martin), Yambasu.
Not used: Clifton.
p Attendance: 120.
