A former prison guard is launching an initiative to get others like him to meet up and talk.
The Big Screw Brew is taking place on Wednesday, September 24 and has been brewed up by Mark Le Sage.
The idea came to him when he visited fellow Spalding resident and former colleague Keith Berry.
“The Big Screw Brew is an opportunity for former and retired prison officers and custodial workers to get together for a brew and a natter,” said Mark, now working as a nurse and who is also a district councillor. “It’s also an opportunity for them to talk about times gone by and how working in a forgotten and hidden industry has had an impact on their well being if at all.
“I decided to put this on after popping round to see my mate Keith who had unfortunately recently lost his wife Eileen and they both formerly worked with myself at HMP Stocken.
“Keith spoke about how lonely he was since Eileen’s death and that everything reminded him that he was now single.
“I found it quite upsetting.
“So I thought he could help me put the Big Screw Brew together.
“We chatted about it and as he said we only normally get to see colleagues at funerals which isn’t the best.”
The event idea is being supported by The Butler Trust who hold their annual #hiddenheroes day on September 24 which promotes and supports the good work done in custodial settings around the country.
The one locally will take place on that date at The Sugar Mill in Bourne from 10.30am.
