Hussey impressed with second-half showing as Bird treble inspires a huge Holbeach United win

Holbeach United 9
W’Boro Whitworth 0

Ruthless Holbeach United crushed Future Lions UCL Premier Division basement boys Wellingborough Whitworth 9-0 at Carter’s Park on Saturday.

The goals came from Will Bird (3), Jack Smith (2), Josh Ford (penalty), Kieran Hamilton, James Tricks and Billy Smith for Danny Hussey’s Tigers, as they moved seven points clear in fourth place.

It’s now six league wins on the bounce for Holbeach, but the boss wasn’t 100 per cent happy with what he saw on the day.

Hussey said: “It’s funny to say, but I wasn’t very happy with the lads at half-time, even at 3-0 up. I had to have a bit of a moan and demand more from them.

“I think they had decided that it was going to be an easy game, but I can’t accept that attitude.

“The second half was much more like what I expect from the team. Will Bird led by example and everybody followed suit.

“Everyone upped their standards and to finish with a 9-0 victory is all I can ask for as a manager.

“It was an impressive improvement and we were ruthless without being disrespectful to Whitworth in any way.

“To be honest, I have to say full credit to them.

“They could easily have crumbled or downed tools, but they never stopped running. You have to credit their professionalism.”

With regular keeper Ricky Drury unavailable on the day, youngster Ricardo Rizzo was handed a debut in the Holbeach goal.

He had little to do, but Hussey was impressed by what he saw from the keeper.

The only negative for the Tigers was an injury picked up by key midfielder Spencer Tinkler, who didn’t re-emerge for the second half.

Thankfully, the knock doesn’t appear to be too serious.

Tigers: Rizzo, Ford, Jackson, Braithwaite (Davies), Clay, Avis, Bird, Tinkler (T Smith), Tricks, J Smith, B Smith (Hamilton).
