Housebuilder looks to cut grass earlier than June following complaints

A housebuilder has vowed to look at cutting grass it is responsible for earlier in the year following complaints from councillors and residents.

Holbeach based Seagate Homes said it usually starts maintaining the open spaces on developments including Wimberley Close in Weston and John Swain’s Way in Long Sutton in June, but will now look to begin maintenance in May.

South Holland District councillors Anthony Casson and Jack Tyrrell say that again this year they’ve received numerous complaints from residents of those developments about grass lengths.

Weston ward member Coun Casson said: “Every year we have to chase them up. It takes an officer’s time doing it year after years.

“I’d like to say get it cut and keep it maintained. The grass in the park is really high. How can children play in it? If you were kicking a ball around it wouldn’t roll very far.

“Some people think it’s the council’s responsibility but we’re talking about pieces of land that have not been adopted by the council.”

Coun Tyrrell had been asking Ashwood Homes to cut the grass at John Swain’s Way, but Ashwood say they only did it as a goodwill gesture and the maintenance belonged to Seagate.

Coun Tyrrell said: “We as councillors and council officers can’t keep chasing up the housebuilders forever.”

Helen Holiday of Seagate Homes said: “We do have a maintenance programme in place to maintain the open areas.

“In previous years we have run this programme from June 1 to mid October, but on reflection we may need to start this a month earlier.

“We aim to complete between ten and 15 cuts in this time period. Our contractors will have had the first cut completed by the end of this week.”
