Hospital inspires Everest trip

A woman is set to climb to Everest base camp to raise money for Holbeach Hospital as a thank you for her father’s care.

Ellie Skinner is taking the 11-day trek up to an altitude of 5,364 metres (17,598ft) at the foot of the world’s highest peak.
She’s doing it in memory of her dad Kevin Storey who died on March 17, 2023, after battling Non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma.
Kevin spent his final weeks in the care of the community-run Holbeach Hospital, a facility that has supported multiple generations of Ellie’s family.
Ellie explains: “Fundraising for Holbeach Hospital means a great deal to me. My father Kevin and his mother Beryl (my grandmother) both spent the final few weeks of their lives in Holbeach Hospital.
“Not only that, my late grandfather Bernard (Kevin’s father) also spent some time in Holbeach Hospital for respite care.
“I’m so grateful for the care that they were able to give Dad, and the support and kindness we received as a family. It means the world to me to be able to give something back to a cause very close to my heart.”
Ellie, who now lives in Sheffield, is training for the trek in the nearby Peak District, making use of the area’s rugged terrain to build her fitness and endurance ahead of the trip.
Home manager Julia Scott said: “Thank you Ellie, for choosing to raise money for Holbeach Hospital. Charitable donations like these enable us to continue the amazing work we do at Holbeach Hospital. Good luck Ellie from all of us.”
