Holbeach United left floored by Huntingdon’s quick-fire goal glut in heavy home defeat

Holbeach United 1 Huntingdon Town 4

Bemused co-boss Danny Clifton bemoaned a “crazy ten minutes” as his side were humbled 4-1 at home by Huntingdon Town on Saturday.

The Tigers, who handed a start to the returning Lewis Baughan, missed a host of chances in the Thurlow Nunn Eastern Counties League Division One clash at Carter’s Park and were duly hit by a sucker punch from Sam Adams (40) just before the break.

Incredibly, Matthew Harris-Herecules (50), Rio Henson (53) and Jay Chilvers (59) all struck for Huntingdon after the break to put them in dreamland at 4-0.

Holbeach’s top scorer Cal Davies grabbed a late consolation, but the game had long been over for the hosts.

“I can’t remember too many football games like that,” said Clifton. “To go from being well on top to 4-0 down like that was mad.

“I think we played quite well overall, but a crazy ten minutes absolutely killed us.

“Cal Davies headed a great chance over from very close in and we should have been level. Ten minutes later and we’re 4-0 down! It’s hard to understand.

“I think we perhaps missed a leader in there to calm things down. We kept playing out from the back and giving the ball away – and they punished us every time.

“It sounds like a bad performance when you look at the result, but we were the better team on the ball.

“Huntingdon were more compact, stayed solid and got the ball forward quickly to their strikers. Credit to them.”

Tigers: Rigby, Nicholson, Johnson, H Henderson, Calvert, Barnes, Bilicz, Wirkowski, Davies, Compton, Baughan. Subs used: F Henderson, Robertson, Yambasu. Not used: Blake, Millinson.

Attendance: 106.
