Holbeach man threatened police with broken bottle

A Holbeach man who threatened two police officers with a broken bottle, has been ordered to undergo rehabilitation days and observe a night time curfew by magistrates in Boston.

Edward Elston, 20, of Park Road, who admitted two assaults as well as damaging a window, was said to have been amongst a group of young males causing a disturbance in Spalding Road, Holbeach on July 28.

Prosecuting, Emma Lant said police had been called after one of the group had broken a window and the two officers went to a bedsit where the group had gone.

She said Elston was there and was clearly drunk, becoming more and more enraged at the presence of the officers, threatening them and waving a beer bottle around, spilling much of it.

She said the bottle was broken and he threatened the two officers with it and was arrested, continuing to be violent and hostile towards the police in the van and later in the custody suite.

When interviewed later, he said he could not remember the incident, but after seeing CCTV images of what had happened, became emotional and apologetic.

Mitigating, Roger Lowther said Elston had become very upset when he saw the CCTV images of his
behaviour.

He said Elston had been ‘really struggling’ with his mental health and was not a habitual drinker but on
this occasion he had been drinking and had been given drugs.

He said that Elston only had one previous conviction – in 2018 – and that whilst this was ‘an unpleasant
incident’, it ‘was an isolated incident’.

The magistrates imposed a 12 month community order with 20 rehabilitation days and ordered Elston to
observe an electronically monitored curfew between the hours of 7pm and 4am every day for the next
four months.

He was also ordered to pay £100 compensation to each of the officers he had threatened and £300
compensation for the damage to the window, as well as £180 in court costs and charges.
