Heritage Days are to be celebrated

A number of buildings not usually open to the public will be joining others welcoming guests later this month.

The national Heritage Open Days scheme is returning with buildings open across this weekend or next weekend.
Church Architecture Seen and Unseen will see the United Reformed Church in Spalding open on Saturday, September 13 between 10am and 4pm.
The Pinchbeck Road building first opened in 1823 and several memorial tablets from the period can be found, many in the crypt underneath the Grade II listed building.
Two of the burials are Hannah and Robert Foe, supposedly descendants of Daniel DeFoe.
The church is open 10am to 4pm and access to the crypt is restricted due to the steps. Light refreshments will also be available.
Gosberton Public Hall will host an event by the Local History Society on Saturday, September 20, with a pop-up museum reflecting village life during World War Two.
There will be photo displays, the chance to talk to an evacuee and refreshments will be available during the event in the High Street building from 10am to 4pm.
Spalding’s Victorian Cemetery will be joining the event and the Gothic Revival-style mausoleum will be open on September 13 and 21.
The 27-acre Victorian cemetery site is open seven days a week but the mausoleum is not.
More than 25,000 people are buried in the cemetery and The Friends of Spalding Cemetery look after 12,000 graves, two chapels and the Johnson Mausoleum.
The Mausoleum is open between 11am and 2pm on September 13 and 20 and the cemetery closes at dusk.
There will be a Heritage Day at Croyland Abbey, in Crowland, on September 13.
A graveyard tour will start at noon and guides will be on hand along with an ephemera exhibition.
The abbey has a rich history dating back to 716 and the west front boasts more than 20 statues which ‘cling magically’ high above.
The West Tower and the belfry will also be open, and are not usually.
There is one guided tour of the graveyard at noon and the Abbey is open from 10am to 4pm.
Holbeach wil be showing off the Royal Observer Corps’ underground bunker on Washway Road.
Pre-booking is needed for both Friday, September 19 and Saturday, September 20.
Tours are at 10.30am, 12.30pm and 2.30pm on both days. Bookings can be made via the Heritage Open Days website at www.heritageopendays.org.uk before September 18 at noon.

Among the buildings opening over the heritage days will be Ayscoughfee Hall School in Spalding.
After the success the school enjoyed at last year’s event, it is taking part again on September 21 and pre-booking is required for everyone.
Visitors will be able to see how the school has evolved since its transformation in 1920.
There is also the chance of uncovering the mystery of Boris, the school’s legendary friendly ghost.
“Discover our rich history and reminisce about its past,” said a spokesman. The school will open from 10am to 3pm with guided tours being held at 11am and 1pm.
Book via the heritage open days website at www.heritageopendays.org.uk
